CAPITOL REEF – June 14, 2023

Capitol Reef is the least visited park in the national park system. It is a hidden gem and one of my favorite parks. We stayed at Fruita Campground. While this campground may not appeal to all (no hook-ups or showers), it is a wonderful park situation in fruit orchards planted by a Morman settlement in 1880. Mule deer walk freely through the campsites and orchards. At the Gifford House at Fruita Campground don’t miss the fresh baked warm fruit pies delivered every morning.

Fremont Native Americans lived near the Fremont River around the year 1000. They raised crops of maize and squash and stored their grain in granaries. In the 13th century, the area went through a change, probably a drought, and the Fremont settlements and crops were abandoned. Many years later, the Paiutes moved into the area. Mormans settled the Fremont Valley in 1880 and established Fruita.

The area has plenty of hiking trails from easy to strenuous. There are many areas that you can drive up close to see the beautiful rock formations. This is one park you don’t want to miss!
